Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration Partners Join a Vibrant Network of Businesses and Academic Institutions

“The Syracuse Center of Excellence and the Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration are transforming Upstate New York into an international center of research and development in the fields of indoor environmental quality, water resource management, and clean and renewable energy.”
Sandra Downey,
Executive Vice President
Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration

The Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration fosters collaborations between academic institutions and industry by providing a mechanism for funding research and technological innovation and facilitating the development, application, and demonstration of projects and services.

Current collaborative activities of the Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration include:

• Assisting local companies in bringing new products to market, by providing peer-reviewed, competitive grants through its Technology Application and Demonstration (TAD) program and Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP).
• Helping local companies host college-level internships in partnership with top academic institutions in Upstate New York.
• Promoting increased public understanding of key issues through education, communications, and outreach programs.

As a partner of the Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration you will support its overall mission, purpose, and vision. In addition, you will automatically become a member of the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems.

The Syracuse Center of Excellence: A Federation of Partners Creating Innovations to Improve Built and Urban Environments

“Members of the Syracuse CoE federation have extraordinary capabilities to create
critically needed innovations in energy and environmental systems.”
Ed Bogucz,
Executive Director,
Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems

“Energy and environmental systems are a key growth industry for our region.”
Irwin Davis, President,
Metropolitan Development Foundation of Syracuse and Central New York

Nationally and globally, demand is growing for innovations in energy and environmental systems. The Syracuse CoE is a federation of firms and institutions that collaborate to develop innovative products and services in three key areas:

• Clean & Renewable Energy—Rising energy prices, declining supplies of petroleum, and increasing concerns about global climate change are driving markets for innovations in energy systems. Members of the Syracuse CoE federation are pursuing multiple opportunities, including the development of new biofuels, improved technologies to produce electricity from the sun and wind, processes to reduce emissions from traditional fuels, and innovations to increase energy efficiency.

• Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)—Rates of asthma, allergies, and “sick building syndrome” due to poor IEQ are increasing worldwide, diminishing human health and productivity. Members of the Syracuse CoE federation are engaged in a broad range of projects focused on improving health and performance in built environments, including the development of new sensor and filtration systems, new low-emissions building materials, and individual micro-climate control systems.

• Water Resources—The quality and security of water resources are critical issues across the country and around the world. Members of the Syracuse CoE federation are leaders in analyzing the complex dynamics of entire watersheds and in developing innovations that promote healthy ecosystems. Current projects include robot monitoring of surface waters in Central New York, the development of sensors to detect harmful contaminants, and innovations that remediate contaminated lakes and rivers.

The Syracuse CoE federation originated from “Vision 2010,” a regional economic development strategy launched in 1996 by the Metropolitan Development Association of Syracuse and Central New York. The Syracuse CoE federation was established in 2002 to include the activities of the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center, Inc. (now known as the Syracuse CoE Office of Industry Collaboration) and the Environmental Quality Systems (EQS) Strategically Targeted Academic Research (STAR) Center.

Results of collaborative projects among members of the Syracuse CoE federation range from generating new knowledge to developing new technologies to the commercialization of new products.

To date, more than 170 firms and institutions have engaged in activities of the Syracuse Center of Excellence federation. Partners of the Syracuse CoE Office of Industry Collaboration automatically become members of the federation.
