Clean and Renewable Energy

Photo: Prof. Ken Visser of Clarkson University is conducting research into wind power and better designs for wind turbines.

Overall Mission:

Syracuse Center of Excellence Members are pursuing multiple opportunities, including new biofuels, improved technologies to produce power from the sun and wind, processes to reduce emissions from traditional fuels, innovations to increase energy efficiency, and workforce development in energy related fields.

SyracuseCoE hopes to integrate existing and emerging clean energy technologies to achieve a net 30% to 50% reduction in energy consumption compared to governing energy standards for built environments, campuses, facilities, and communities.

Scope:

The scope of SyracuseCoE energy projects includes facilitating the commercialization of biofuels, bioenergy, and bioproducts from research and development activities while simultaneously providing environmental, economic, and energy security benefits.

Additionally, strategic clean and renewable energy technology/service areas include systems engineering alogorithms that analyze and facilitate deployment of a variety of energy generation assets on the grid; design and engineering of distributed generation sources that connect to or supplement the grid; intelligent building management systems that dynamically analyze and forecast energy needs; development of forestry- and agriculture-based products that reduce environmental impacts and provide alternatives to existing petroleum based products; and development of closed-loop biomass system.

Example Test Beds:

Crop demonstration areas such as the Tully, NY willow stand for growing biomass, the biorefinery facility at the SyracuseCoE HQ, and various municipal demonstration projects, including those in Syracuse's Near Westside neighborhood.

Projects:

Clean and renewable energy projects funded by SyracuseCoE include energy efficient split-stream desiccant air conditioning, energy recovery ventilation, commercialization of fast-growing willow biomass, energy efficient chilled beam/induction air conditioning, and solar power window facades.
