Environmental Education Minigrant Program:
Mitigating Pollution Through Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Materials Management

This RFP is now closed.

In order to implement pollution prevention initiatives throughout K-12 schools in EPA Region 2 and also connect the “lessons learned” to more positively impact communities, SyracuseCoE CSCS awarded sub-grants to fund community projects based at local school districts. These projects will either implement green infrastructure technologies or create sustainable materials management programs. Projects will:

  • Address  both stormwater  pollution  and sustainable  materials  management  issues (solid waste management) in local communities;
  • Connect  students  and  educators  with  these  critical  topics  and  teach  them  the  skills and information necessary to become environmental stewards; and,
  • Bring together schools and neighborhoods to address pressing environmental challenges locally.
  • Address EPA educational and environmental priorities and meet the definition of “environmental  education” as outlined by EPA.
  • Demonstrate a partnership between community organization(s) and the school district, in order to ensure that awards have broad impact across EPA Region 2.

The purpose of this mini-grant program is to create dynamic, relevant, and robust educational programs, which implement pollution prevention initiatives throughout K-12 schools and their communities in EPA Region 2 (New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and eight tribal nations).

SyracuseCoE CSCS sought proposals that either implement green infrastructure technologies or create sustainable materials management programs. This mini-grant program is intended to increase environmental stewardship by promoting real-world skills for both students and community members as they work together to implement these projects. SyracuseCoE CSCS awarded up to 30 grants total throughout EPA Region 2.

Possible Mini-Grant Project Topics:

  • Community rain gardens
  • Vermicomposting bin construction for classroom compost programs
  • Creative reuse activities
  • Rain barrel construction, painting and installation
  • Student-run workshops on recycling for both community members and fellow students
  • Development of an instructional video related to program topics

Deadline to submit proposals was April 30, 2013 at 5:00pm EST
